Is It Worth It? Is It Worth It? Our Fitness Experts Test the Latest Trends - So You Don't Have To - by Gina Lombardi The lean muscles, flexibility, and grace of ballet dancers are truly enviable - which may help explain the rapid spread of ballet-inspired fitness classes to gyms across the country. We wondered: Can these workouts transform real women's figures better than other exercises can? How they work Most national gyms now offer ballet themed classes that are based on actual ballet form and moves; they focus on strength and flexibility for your legs and core, and are usually taught by dancers. No special equipment or skills are required. The upside It's no shock that many pro athletes use ballet in their training. It improves coordination, balance, strength, posture, and flexibility. Classes may include medicine balls, body bars, or resistance bands, so there's more variety than in many yoga or Piles classes (which give you similar benefits). And anyone can take classes; most are fairly easy on your knees and back. The downside If you haven't danced before, you may be a bit confused at first. And because the moves involve little or no weight, ballet-inspired workouts aren't enough to replace your regular strength sessions. Be prepared for loose interpretations of the ballet theme, too (it's best to call ahead for details before you go). One Ballet Pilates class I tried was mainly leg lifts and stretches done on a mat - just as you'd do in a traditional Pilates class. The cost If you're not already a member, most clubs will charge about $25 per class. (Some won't allow nonmembers to take classes at all.) The bottom line Ballet-based fitness routines are a fun and challenging way to exercise, and may get your physique closer to that of a dancer, But because most won't replace regular cardio or strength sessions, you would have to do them in addition to your usual workout. To find a ballet-themed class near you, check with your local gym or order one of the many ballet-fitness DVDs available online. We especially like the cardio benefits of the self-titles DVD from Cardio Barre ($29.95; 818-761-4525 or www.cardiobarre.com). |
